Achieving accreditation through ATHEA demonstrates a commitment to academic excellence, institutional integrity, and continuous improvement and ensures your institution meets the European Standards and Guidelines (ESG).

As a recognized accrediting body, ATHEA provides higher education institutions with a rigorous, peer-reviewed process that enhances their credibility, strengthens their quality assurance mechanisms, and aligns them with the European Standards and Guidelines (ESG). Download a copy below.

Candidacy Criteria
An Institutional Member who has completed all of the requirements for candidacy status as stated in the Accreditation Policy Manual will be a considered a candidate for accreditation. The Institutional Member must have graduates of the programme and be in existence for at least three years. The specific term used to state the outcome a positive outcome for candidacy is ATHEA-Candidate. In the ATHEA Charter, the specific membership category is Candidate Member. The member, therefore, becomes an ATHEA Candidate Member, having been granted ATHEA-Candidate by the ATHEA Board of Commissioners.

To become ATHEA-Candidate, an institution must:
  1. Be an institutional member of the ATHEA.
  2. Submit a Candidacy Self-Evaluatio (go to downloads for example).
  3. . Applications for Candidacy must be approved and signed by the institution’s chief executive officer (i.e., president, chancellor, director general), affirming the institution is a commitment to abide by the accreditation policies and procedures of the THEA Board of Commissioners.
  4. Pay its application fee for candidacy status to ATHEA.

Accreditation Criteria
For an institution to be considered for first-time accreditation by the ATHEA Board of Commissioners, the institution must:

  1. Be granted ATHEA-Candidate status by the ATHEA Board of Commissioners.
  2. Prepare a self-evaluation. The self-evaluation template is available for members (go to downloads for example).
  3. Pay the application fee for accreditation to ATHEA.
  4. Undergo a site visit for peer review.
  5. Be reviewed by the ATHEA Board of Commissioners.
Reaffirmation of Accreditation Criteria
After 7 years following the date of accreditation, reaffirmation of accreditation is required for an institution to maintain its accredited status. For the institution to be considered for reaffirmation of accreditation by the ATHEA Board of Commissioners, the institution must:

  1. Be in good standing with ATHEA as an Institutional Member.
  2. Prepare a self-evaluation.
  3. Pay its application fee for reaffirmation of accreditation to ATHEA.
  4. Undergo a site visit.
  5. Be reviewed by the ATHEA Board of Commissioners.
